PJ City's local power overcome Melaka United

Team PJ

Respect PJ City.

Despite fielding an all-local lineup, PJ City upset fancied Melaka United 1-0 in their opening Super League match at MBPJ Stadium on Saturday.

Coach P. Maniam praised his team's performance against Melaka, touted as one of the title favourites.

New signing S. Kumaahran was the toast of PJ City by scoring in the 42nd minute.

"Melaka are a strong team, so it was not easy today (Saturday). However, my players played well for the three points," said Maniam after the match.

"It is still early, and we should not get too excited. We have to continue this momentum in our next match against Sabah."

Meanwhile, Melaka coach Risto Vidakovic was unhappy with his team's performance.

Vidakovic hopes his team will bounce back when they play Penang at City Stadium tomorrow.

"We did not have enough time to prepare for the new season as our foreigners only reported for duty 10 days before our first game.

"We have many new players, and it will take time for everyone to gel as a team," said Vidakovic.

It is learnt that Melaka players have not been paid for two months.

When asked whether the salary issue had affected his team's performance on Saturday, Vidakovic said: "Many players reported late for training ahead of the new season. I cannot say anything about this (salary issues)."
